Jamie Reid – Culture Shifter

Sure, some people would argue Andy Warhol was the single most important artist of the 20th century, and at times I could be one of those people. But, if I really think about it, for me it’s all about Jamie Reid. He is my Andy!

He took elements of Warhol and pop art, infused it with doses of situationism, social commentary, dissent and a heavy dose of black humour and created a style so new and revolutionary that it literally became the visual language of a new and exciting subculture, aka Punk.

First gaining notoriety in the late 1970’s as a designer behind the Sex Pistols, his work has influenced everything from fashion, contemporary art to modern magazine design. In a way his work has completely changed the way we see the world around us. That is a very rare thing to do.

All hail a true Culture Shifter.

Jamie continues to live and work in England.

“The Medium is the Message”

“The Medium is the Message” wrote a famous Canadian Marshall McLuhan. Some Product’s medium is the stuff we wear. The messages are sometimes meaningless but some tend to either reflect or mirror how we are feeling at a certain moment.

” I Don’t Give a ****” tees and tanks available now from Some Product.

The Final Chapter at The Waldorf Hotel

Our friends (Tom, Ernesto, Danny & Scott)  at The Waldorf Hotel in Vancouver will be closing their doors for good on January 20th, 2013. Some Product and Parker Bosley of The Gay Nineties collaborated on a one-off tee as a fitting tribute to this short lived and legendary party palace. To a new and bright future that awaits!

Dead Union Finds

Last weekend I met an Aussie guy named Kirby who is a vintage picker and loves weird and esoteric old tees. So do I… Here are a few gems from his stash.

Reality Bites Art Show

We are so exited and proud to curate and sponsor an art show at Little Mountain Gallery in Vancouver.

About two years ago Some Product released our first batch of a limited edition Dog The Bounty Hunter tees. It was a huge success and we have re printed it several times since. The show is inspired by and examines the characters that populate modern day Reality TV with all proceeds from the show going to Little Mountain Gallery.

Facebook Event Page here.

Everyone Loves Raymond

As far as I remember art is pretty much the only thing I cared about since I was a little kid. Making art, looking at art, knowing about it, etc…I can’t think of a bigger influence in terms of humor, aesthetics and style then Ray Pettibon. His striking and often brutally funny images continue to inspire me to this day.

“There was basically all your standard or regular gig posters, and then there were the Ray Pettibon gig posters.”

Some things just never change

I recently got an email from a very old friend that contained these two drawings as attachments. Immediately, I realized that these random doodles were made by me in one of his notebooks years ago. I guess it must have been in high school. Not to get overly analytical, but it’s interesting how these two drawings, so poignantly encapsulate something of my teenage psyche. It’s entirely plausible that similar images may appear, if I were to unconsciously start doodling right now.

Thanks to Bob G. for holding on to these Freudian glimpses.
